ONLY ONE PERSON CAN OWN THIS SET !
You have stumbled on to a very rare opportunity to own a set of "Master Dies" (also known as Hubs) that were used to create the official medals to commemorate the Apollo 11 Flight and the "First
Men on the Moon" in July of 1969. They were produced by the August C. Frank Co. of Philadelphia.
I bought these dies on May 19th, 1979 at a court ordered public auction of the possessions of the last surviving member of the August C. Frank Co. to operate the family business. I was told
that this was the oldest die sinker company in the United States and they had recently gone out of business. They had sold the company along with other dies but this last member to run the company had
kept many of the more historically important dies for himself when he sold the company. I was fortunate enough to know how important they were because I was in the rare coins business. I bought them
all ! I sold off the bulk of the less important ones and kept some of the better ones for myself. Now, I am down to the Apollo dies. I kept all of the Master Dies ! Why ? Because the master dies ARE
THE MOST IMPORTANT dies. They are the dies used to produce the working dies. The working dies are the dies used to strike the medals ---and they wear out and are discarded very quickly as scrap.
And, the working dies cannot be used to create other working dies--ONLY the master dies can do that ! So, if you should choose--you could have other dies made from these ! I even thought about using
them to strike "foils" for candy and chocolates. They would never wear out doing a light job like that.
So, if you think these are for you and you would like to have a remembrance of Armstong, Collins, and Aldrin and their historic flight--this is it ! They each weigh about 3 lbs. and are approx.
2 1/2" H.
